The more you can avoid travel while under a cycle of fertility medications, the better. But, if your treatment falls on the holidays or you have a work trip that’s unavoidable, make plans so as not to compromise your medications or forget any supplies when you are on the road. Whether you’re driving or flying, remember a few things when traveling with fertility medications:
Keep Fertility Meds Accessible
If you’re flying, pack your fertility meds in your carry-on bags. It’s possible your checked baggage could be lost, and you’d miss a treatment.
Checked baggage may also be subject to temperature changes in the hold of the plane or cargo compartment of a bus or train. That could compromise the integrity of the medications.
Keep Them Cool
If your fertility medication needs to be kept in a refrigerator, you should pack it with an ice pack. Make your own with a zip-top baggie filled with ice or purchase a cold pack. On a plane, you might ask if the flight attendants can keep it in their refrigerator. Just don’t forget it when you deplane!
Check that your destination has a refrigerator for keeping your meds cool as well.
If your travel requires screening of your carry-on bags, alert the officers to your prescription medications immediately. Ask the office for a prescription that you can present upon screening, too. Have the office’s phone number immediately available in case further information is required. It doesn’t hurt to call the airline in advance of your trip to find out whether you need to take other precautions.
If you’re taking oral pills, you don’t need to let security know; only liquid medications require extra screening.
Use Original Packaging
Keep your fertility medications in the original boxes and vials. Make the official labeling easy to see, including any attached prescription info and pharmacy details.
Pack any syringes you need alongside the medications, instead of in a separate compartment. It helps to put them all together in a clear, sealed plastic bag for easy presentation to security.
Remember All Your Supplies
Make sure you bring enough medication and refill all prescriptions before you head out on your trip. Have the name of a pharmacy at your destination available, just in case.
If you’re close to the time you’ll need your trigger shot, bring the HCG or Lupron with you. You’d rather have it and not need it, than miss the window of fertility or scramble to locate these specialized prescriptions while traveling.
Your medication is just part of your protocol. Don’t forget syringes, alcohol wipes, gauze, and a sharps container for disposal of used syringes. That makes traveling during a fertility cycle go smoothly and means you’ll experience minimal disruption.
Arrange for Monitoring
Have a conversation with the staff before you leave so you understand what support might be necessary during your trip.
Feel free to stay in contact with Dr. Sepilian’s staff while you’re away. If you should have any questions, they’re happy to help. If you need monitoring, they can also put you in touch with an appropriate clinic at your destination.
